What the review covers
System topology and data flow
We map what actually exists - services, dependencies, data stores, integration points, external APIs - and compare it against available documentation. Gaps between the two are themselves findings. We trace data flows through the system to identify where coupling is tight, where boundaries are ambiguous, and where failure in one component propagates silently to others.
Scalability and load characteristics
We assess how the system behaves under load, based on current traffic data, database query patterns, and infrastructure configuration. This includes identifying stateful services that prevent horizontal scaling, missing caching layers, synchronous dependencies that create latency chains, and database schemas that will degrade as data volume grows.
Resilience and failure modes
We work through failure scenarios: what happens when a dependency goes down, when a queue backs up, when a deployment goes wrong. We assess retry logic, circuit breakers, fallback paths, and observability coverage. A system that works fine in normal operation but fails silently under stress is a liability that rarely shows up in standard code reviews.
Maintainability and operational cost
We evaluate the engineering overhead embedded in the current architecture: how hard it is to onboard new developers, how long deployments take, how much manual intervention routine operations require. Technical debt is real cost - we quantify it where we can and flag where it is accumulating fastest.
Security surface
We identify exposed attack surface at the architecture level: public endpoints that should not be public, over-permissioned service accounts, missing encryption in transit or at rest, authentication flows that bypass central identity, and infrastructure that carries production secrets in the wrong place.
What you receive
The output of an Architecture Review is a written assessment structured around findings and recommendations, not a slide deck summary of conversations. Findings are classified by severity and category. Recommendations are prioritized by impact and implementation complexity, so the first ten items on the list are the ones that give the most return for the effort.
For clients who need it, we extend the output to include a proposed target architecture with a migration sequence, dependency sequencing, and a realistic timeline. That extension is scoped separately.
How the engagement runs
A standard Architecture Review runs two to three weeks. Larger or more complex systems take longer; we scope that upfront and do not expand scope without agreement. The final session is a working review of findings with the technical team - not a presentation to an audience, but a conversation where the team can push back, add context, and help prioritize.
